Geographical Facts


Geographic coordinates: Cambodia lies between 10 and 15 degrees north latitude and 102 and 108 degrees east longitude.


Total land area: 181,035 square kilometers.


Land boundaries: Cambodia's boundary is 2,600 kilometers, consisting of 2,160-kilometer land border and 440-kilometer coastal border.


Coastline: The country has a coastline of 440 kilometers and extensive mangrove stands.


Maritime claims: Territorial sea = 12 nautical miles.


Continental shelf = to a depth of 200 meters or, beyond that limit, to where the depth of superjacent waters admits of the exploitation of the natural resources of the said areas.

Mountainous area: There are three main mountainous areas: in the south-west (the Elephant and Cardamom mountains), along the northern border with Thailand (the Dangrek mountains) and in the north-eastern corner of the country (the Eastern Highlands).


Rivers: The country's central plain comprises ¾ of the total land area. The plain area is drained by the Mekong, Tonle Sap, and Bassac Rivers through the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam.

The Mekong River system of Cambodia comprises the Upper Mekong River and Lower Mekong River, Bassac River (100 km), and all branches of the Mekong River. The Mekong River of Cambodia has 500-kilometer distance and flows from Loba Khon - Cambodia-Laos border to Cambodia-Vietnam border through Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Cham, Kandal and Prey Veng provinces.


The Lake of Tonle Sap has 150-kilometers length and 32-kilometer width, and occupies an area of approximately 4,800 square kilometers in dry season and 10,000 square kilometers in rainy season.

The Tonle Sap has 100-kilometer distance and stretches from Phnom Penh to Kampong Chhnang province.


Climate: Tropical monsoon with two distinct seasons: the rainy season from June-October and a dry season from November-May. Temperature is between 27.7 – 36.5 degrees Celsius.
